Chapter 1Liddell Penhale

He smelled the money before he saw the islands.
It came across the water in the dark, an hour before the lookout called land, and Liddell Penhale woke in his bunk with it already in his throat — ammonia and rotted fish and something underneath that, mineral and sweetish, the smell of a thing that had been piling up a long time. He lay still and read it the way he had once read smoke on a foreign wind: not what it was, but what it was worth. A boy raised on the Cornish coast learned that the sea sent its profits ahead of its wreckage. You smelled the tar of a broken hull, or the spice of a foundered Indiaman, or the sweet stink of a drowned cargo of hides, and you got down to the water before your neighbour did, and you took what the rocks had taken first. The wind off these islands carried no wreck. It carried only the one cargo, and the cargo was vast.
He went up on deck in his shirt. The Petrel lay hove-to in the swell, waiting on the light, and around her in the black water rode other ships — he counted their riding-lanterns, eleven, fifteen, more than twenty, strung across the anchorage like a town set down at sea — and every one of them was here for the same reason he was. Barques and full-rigged ships and a Yankee clipper with her yards crossed sharp as a knife, and all of them empty, all of them rolling high and light, all of them waiting their turn at the trough. Penhale stood at the rail and worked the figure without meaning to. A ship that came round the Horn in ballast and went home full carried nothing the whole way out but the promise of what she'd find. The promise was riding ahead of the dawn now, in his throat, and it told him the men who owned this water were going to be richer than God ever made a Cornishman.
Then the light came up grey behind the mainland, behind the dark shoulder of the Andes a hundred miles inland, and he saw them.
He had been told they were white. He had not been told they were mountains. Three of them, low and long off the larboard bow, rising out of a sea the colour of pewter — and they were white the way bone is white, the way salt is white where it has dried for a thousand years and no rain has ever come to wash it grey. The cliffs went up sheer from the surf, two hundred feet of it, and the white was not snow and not chalk and not stone. It was the cargo. The whole island was the cargo, stacked up out of the water in the shape of a hill, and a man could stand on the deck of an empty ship and read its value in feet the way he read a draught-mark.
A hundred and eighty feet, he made it, at the high face of the northern island. He did the sum before he had decided to. A hundred and eighty feet of it, and the deposits ran back from the cliff he could see God knew how far, and they were selling it at home for nine pounds the ton and the price was climbing, and there were eleven hundred ships a year would come for it if there were berths to load them, and a long ton was two thousand two hundred and forty pounds of weight, and the whole arithmetic opened in front of him like a hold with the hatches off and the lamp held down inside. He stopped breathing for a moment. Not from the stink. From the size of it.
"You'll get used to the smell," said a voice at his elbow.
The mate, a Bristol man named Curnow, had come up beside him with his pipe lit against the reek, which was a small useless vanity Penhale had watched him keep up for six weeks. Curnow was a sound enough seaman and a fool about most things ashore. He had spent the voyage telling Penhale what the islands were, as men will tell you about a thing to which they have never owned a single square foot of title.
"I don't intend to get used to it," Penhale said. "I intend to bottle it."
Curnow laughed, took it for a joke, which it was not. Penhale was looking at the birds.
He had taken them at first for weather. There was a darkness over the islands and over a stretch of sea to seaward of them, a smudge low on the brightening sky, and he had thought it a squall coming on, or the kind of standing haze that hung in a cold current. But it moved wrong for weather. It thickened and thinned and turned upon itself, and as the light grew he saw that the whole of it was made of birds. Not a flock. A flock was a thing a man could count, or guess at, the way you'd guess a school of pilchards by the boil on the water. This was the air itself gone solid and dark with cormorants, a river of them pouring off the cliffs and bending out over the water in a column that did not end, that went up and out and down to where the sea was darker still with the shoal they were after, and every bird in it was diving and rising and pouring back, and the noise came across the water now over the slap of the swell — a high continuous roar like surf in a cave, the sound of a number too large to be a sound.
Penhale had stood under a great many things larger than himself in his life — gales, the open Atlantic, the law. He found that he had taken hold of the rail.
"Guanay, they call 'em," Curnow said, comfortable, the pipe-smoke going sideways. "Them and the boobies and the big pelicans. That's your whole business there, Mr. Penhale, flying about. Every speck of that mountain's been dropped out of the back end of one of those, over I don't know how many hundred year. Old hands say the Indians used to put a man to death for so much as troubling 'em in the nesting season. Worshipped the things, near enough."
"They didn't worship them," Penhale said.
"How's that?"
"They priced them." He had not taken his eyes off the dark column. A thousand years of birds, the man had said, and had said it the way a man says a thing he finds quaint. But Penhale was a Methodist's son and a wrecker's apprentice and he had learned his sums on a beach where the worth of a barrel was decided by how long it had been on the bottom, and he understood at once, looking at that pouring darkness, that he was looking at the makings of the thing he had come to sell. The birds were not in the way of the cargo. The birds were the cargo, in an earlier form, still aloft. Each one weighed nothing. He could have held a hundred of them in his two hands. But there were more of them than there were numbers he kept ready, and they had been at it longer than there had been a Cornwall, and the dead weight of all that nothing, dried white and stacked two hundred feet into the sky, was going to fetch more by the ton than anything ever hauled off a Cornish rock in the history of theft.
The light reached the islands full. The white went from bone to a hard glare that made him narrow his eyes, the kind of white that throws the sun back at you off a deck and gives the hands snow-blindness in a flat calm. And against that glare, low along the top of the cliff where the surf-roar of the birds was thickest, he saw the smaller dark shapes that were not birds.
Men.
They were strung along the cliff-edge of the northern island in a line, and they were moving, and between them and the water's edge below ran the long pale tongues of canvas and timber that he would learn to call the chutes. He watched, and a barrow went up the line, tipped by a figure he could not make out at the distance into the mouth of a chute, and a white plume jumped off the cliff and slid down the canvas tongue into a lighter waiting in the swell below, and the lighter took it and another plume came down after it, and another, the whole white side of the island coming away a barrow at a time and going down to the boats and out to the ships. There were a great many of the small dark figures. He did not count them. He found, with a part of his mind he had spent thirty-one years learning not to listen to, that he did not want to count them.
He listened to it instead, the part. It said: that is how a mountain is moved. By the barrow. By the man. And he stood on the deck of the Petrel in his shirt with the smell of the fortune in his throat, and watched the men taking the island down to the sea a barrowload at a time, and something went through him that he had no entry for.
He knew the shape of it, though. He had felt it once before, exactly once, and it had been thirty-one years ago come Michaelmas, and he had been eleven.

He did not think about it. He had spent his whole life not thinking about it, and he was good at it, the way he was good at everything that turned a profit, and not thinking about it had turned the largest profit of all. But the line of men on the cliff put it in his chest the way the smell had put itself in his throat, ahead of his consent, and there was nothing to do but stand and let it pass through.
He had been a wrecker's boy on the cliffs above St. Just, sound and quick and worth his keep, and his father had been a Methodist who sang on Sundays and drank the rest of the week and at last had sold him. That was the plain word for it and Penhale used the plain word, in the one room of his head where he used it. A press-gang did not pay; a press-gang took. But there were captains short-handed who would pay a few shillings into a hard man's palm for a sound boy delivered quiet to the deck, no questions, the boy logged aboard as a volunteer in a hand that was not his own, and Penhale's father had been a hard man and short of drink, and Penhale had gone down to the harbour to carry his father's net and had not come home for nine years.
He remembered the deck. He remembered being stood in a line, much like the line on the cliff, and a man with a book walking down it and putting his thumb under each chin in turn and tipping the face up to the light to look at the teeth and the eyes, and saying a figure to the man beside him, who wrote it down. He remembered understanding, at eleven, with a clarity that had never once left him and had made him the wealthiest agent the house had ever sent round the Horn, that he had a price. That he was, at that moment, an entry. That somewhere a sum had been done with him in it, the way he had just now, on this deck, done a sum with a hundred and eighty feet of bird dung in it, and that the doing of the sum had not been cruel and had not been kind. It had only been arithmetic. The man with the book had not hated him. The man with the book had appraised him, and found him sound, and logged him, and the cruelty was not in the man at all. The cruelty was that the sum could be done.
Nine years he was at sea before he was man enough and brute enough to come ashore in Bristol and never again stand on the side of the line the book walked down. He had learned the trade of the man with the book. He had become the man with the book. There was no other safe place to stand. You stood where the thumb was, not where the chin was; you held the pen, not the teeth; you did the appraising, you were not the thing appraised — and a man who had once been cargo, and had felt the entry made with his own self inside it, did the appraising better than any man born free, because he never for one instant forgot that it could be done to him again the moment he stopped being the one who did it.
That was the whole of his philosophy and he had never said it aloud and he never would. He looked at a thing and he saw its worth. A hull, a cask, a contract, the islands, the men on the islands. He stripped it in his mind to its value and he logged it kept or written off, and he did it as easily and as little cruelly as breathing, and it had made him rich, and it had cost him every soft thing a man was supposed to want, and on the rare mornings when the cost came up in him like bilge he reminded himself what the alternative was. The alternative was the line on the cliff. The alternative was being the entry instead of the man who made it.
A line came into his head then, unbidden, in his father's drink-thickened voice off a chapel bench forty years gone — we are but strangers here, we do not crave a home — and he heard it surface and was angry, the way he was always angry when it happened, because it only ever happened when he was afraid, and he was not in the habit of being afraid, and the fact that the hymn had come up told him a thing about himself the arithmetic could not. He crushed it. He thought instead about the price per ton and the queue of ships and the consignee's man who would be waiting on the beach to tell him no, and how he meant to be over that man's head and into his chair before the season turned. The hymn went down. The fear went down with it. The chest went quiet.
But it had logged something while it was open, the chest, the way a draught-mark logs the load whether the master wants it logged or not. It had taken a breath of that air — the bottled fortune, the thing he meant to sell — down past his throat and into him, and it would keep its own account of what it cost to breathe here, and it would render that account at a time of its own choosing and in a currency he did not yet know he held. He did not feel it as anything but the stink. He felt it the way a man feels the first shilling of a debt he is sure he will never have to pay, which is to say he did not feel it at all.

By the time the Petrel worked in toward the anchorage the sun was full up and the smell had stopped being a wind and started being a place. It got into the eyes. It got into the back of the throat and sat there with a faint burn, and Curnow had the hands close the skylight and canvas over the after hatch the way you'd batten down for weather, because the dust of the thing, once you were in among the ships at the loading, came off the chutes and the lighters in a fine white haze that hung over the whole anchorage and salted down onto the decks and into the rigging and into the food and, a man supposed, into the men. The Yankee clipper they passed close aboard had her ports shut tight in the heat and her crew up in the tops, sitting in the shrouds like crows, come up out of the holds to breathe. The mate of her hailed them and asked how long they'd been on the berth, and the figure he gave back — seven weeks at anchor and not yet half full, the chutes working the one island and the labour short — went into Penhale's head and joined the rest of the arithmetic, and the arithmetic said: short labour. There is the throat of it. The mountain is two hundred feet high and they cannot get it down to the water fast enough, and the price climbs while the ships rot at anchor, and whoever solves the throat owns the trade. He looked again at the line of small dark figures on the cliff, and he thought, they need more of those, and he filed the thought the way he filed everything, without heat, kept.
He went below and shaved in the swinging glass and put on the dark coat and the high collar, because he was going ashore to meet the man whose chair he meant to have, and a man who had once stood in a line to have his teeth looked at understood better than any born gentleman the exact power of a clean collar. When he came up, the boat was alongside to take him in.
The white island stood over them now, close to, enormous, the cliff of it gone the colour of old ivory where the new face had been cut and a deep weathered cream above, where the high marks of last year's cut and the year before's stood in faint horizontal lines like the rings of a felled tree, like tide-lines, like a draught-scale painted up the side of a hull to show how deep she could be loaded before she swam. He read them. He could not help reading them. Each line was a season of the trade, and there were not so very many lines, and he understood — alone among the men in the boat, alone perhaps among the eleven hundred ships and the whole house in London and the whole bankrupt government in Lima that had mortgaged its existence to this stink — that the scale ran both ways. That a mark painted on a hull to show how deep she could be loaded was also the mark that showed how much she had left before she went under. That the thing was a mountain and the thing was finite, both, and that every barrow going down the chute brought the next line nearer the water.
The figures on the cliff were close enough now to be men. He could see their rags and the cloths bound over their faces against the dust and the way they leaned into the barrows, and he could see, here and there, one of them stop and stand a moment at the very edge of the cliff with the surf working two hundred feet below, and look out at the open water and the dark pouring column of the birds, and not move, until another man came and the barrow went on.
The boat ground up onto the shingle. Penhale stepped out onto the island dry-shod, the way a man steps who means to own a place, and the smell closed over him entire, and somewhere up the white cliff a barrow tipped and a plume of the fortune came down the chute and slid past him to the waiting boat, and he stood on the beach with his account-book under his arm and looked up at the mountain he had come to spend, and began, in the one room of his head where no hymn could reach, to count it down.

Chapter 2Mei Loong-fa

The paper had eight years on it. He could not read the rest, but he could read that, because the broker in the Amoy wineshop had drawn the character for eight in spilled liquor on the table with his finger, three years before the boy Mei still was had believed there were such men as honest brokers, and had said eight, and then a passage home, and then your own field. Mei had a good memory. It was the one thing the sea had not taken off him. He held the paper now in the grey light of the landing and counted the days he had been gone from his mother's house, and the count was a hundred and nine, and against eight years a hundred and nine was nothing, was the first cut of a knife into a hog, and he folded the paper along its old folds and put it back inside his shirt where the salt had not yet got it, and he thought: then I begin the eight years today. He had decided to think it that way. A man who began the count today owed it fewer days than a man who had begun it on the ship and gone mad watching it not move.
There had been such men on the ship. He had watched them.
They came off the tender forty at a time, and a man on the beach with a book counted them as they came, not by their faces but by touching each one on the shoulder as he passed and saying a number in his own language, and Mei understood the number was for the company and not for the men, the way a fisherman counts fish into a basket and does not name them. He was the thirty-first. He felt the hand on his shoulder and heard the word — thirty-one — and he kept it, the way he kept everything, because a number told to you was a thing you could check later, and a man who could check the count could sometimes find the lie in it, and the lie was where the eight years lived.
The island stood up white over all of them. He had seen it from the water and thought it snow, though he had never seen snow, only heard of it from a man of the north on the ship who had died of the bloody flux off a coast none of them could name and gone over the side wrapped in his own mat. Now Mei stood under the white and saw it was not snow and not stone. It was higher than the tallest thing in Amoy. It went up sheer from the surf, and the smell came off it and got into his throat and sat there, and his eyes began at once to run — not from grief, he had no grief to spare on the first morning, but on their own, the way an onion makes a knife-hand weep, the way the body weeps when a thing is being done to it that the man has not agreed to.
He did not wipe his eyes. He had learned on the ship not to use a hand for a thing the face would do by itself. You saved the hand. He looked instead, while the water ran down, at everything there was to look at, because he did not yet know which of it would keep him alive, and a man learning a new place could not afford to decide too soon what was nothing.
He saw the chutes — long tongues of canvas and timber running down the white cliff to the boats — and he understood the work before anyone told him: the mountain came down those, and it came down by the barrow, and the barrow came down by the man. He saw the guards, two of them, with old muskets and the bored faces of men paid to stand, and he marked where they stood and what they could see from there and what they could not. He saw a low stone building near the beach with a great beam and a hanging scale in it, and he saw that the same scale that weighed the white going out weighed the sacks of rice coming in, and he filed that, because a place that weighed your food on the same beam it weighed its profit was a place that would let you starve by arithmetic and call it fair. He saw a row of long sheds back from the water where the men were housed. He counted the sheds. He counted, as the gang was marched up toward them, the men already on the island — not exactly, there was no time, but he took a guess off the chutes working and the barrows on the face and the bodies he could see, and his guess was several hundred, and he thought, several hundred to dig a mountain two hundred feet high, and the ships out there waiting, and a part of him he did not like, the part the broker had smelled on him in the wineshop and chosen him for, said: they are short of men. A man who is more than a barrow here will be wanted.
He was nineteen. He had been a tally-clerk's runner in Amoy for a rice factor on the wharf, before the factor failed and the debts came down on the family and the broker found him hungry at the edge of the fish market and told him about California. He could read a hand of business numbers in two scripts and keep a running sum in his head across a long afternoon without setting it down, which the factor had valued and paid him a little extra for, a hundred cash a month, and which was the reason he could read the eight on the paper and the reason he was already, on the first morning, counting the sheds. It was not courage. It was a habit of the eye that had been ground into him before he was tall enough to see over the factor's table, and it did not feel like anything. It felt like breathing. But it was going to be the thing.

They gave the new gang the day to rest, which was not kindness. It was the company protecting its purchase. A man worked out off the ship was no use at the face for a week, and the company had paid three hundred pesos a head at the port for them — Mei had heard the figure from a guard who said it to another guard as the tender came in, the way you'd say the price of a load of hogs, three hundred the head, and half of them die in a year, where's the sense in it, and the other guard had said, the sense is the half that don't — so they fed the new men a bowl of rice and a few threads of dried fish and let them lie in the shed out of the sun, and Mei lay on the boards and did not sleep. He listened.
A man two places down was from a village a half-day from Mei's own. Mei knew it by the few words the man said in his fever-half-sleep, the shape of them, the way the village said water with the tongue further forward than the city did. He was older, forty perhaps, a thin hard man with a burn-scar up one forearm from some kiln or forge, and his name, when Mei asked him low in the dark of the shed, was Cheng A-Yün, and he had been a maker of roof-tiles, and he had a wife and a son of eleven, the same age Mei's youngest brother had been when Mei left, and he had been brought aboard at Macao believing he was bound for a sugar plantation in a place called Havana where a tile-maker might be wanted for the building going on, and had learned he was bound for Peru only when the ship was three weeks at sea and a man who spoke the language had been beaten for asking.
"How long is yours," Mei said. Meaning the paper. The years.
"Eight," said A-Yün.
"Mine is eight."
"Everyone's is eight." A-Yün laughed, low, not a laugh. "The paper does not matter. I have been here four months. No man's eight years has finished. The first man to come, they say, came when this was begun, and he is not gone home, he is under the white." He turned his face to the boards. "Do not count your eight years, little brother. It will eat you."
But Mei was already counting them. He could no more stop counting them than stop the eyes running. He lay on the boards with the smell in his throat and the white mountain standing over the shed in the dark, and he set the eight years out in his head as a column, eight rows, and against the first row he set the hundred and nine days, and then he set beside the whole column the thing he was working toward, which was not a field and not the broker's lie. It was a low grey house on a lane that ran down to the harbour at Amoy, and in it a woman who burned three sticks before the kitchen-god on the right days and a man who had once carried Mei on his shoulders to see the boats come in and was now too old to carry anything, and two brothers, and the smell of fish congee in the morning and the particular cold of the stone floor under a bare foot in the second month of the year, and he held the whole of it the way you hold a coal through a sleeve, close enough to keep, not close enough to burn, and he thought: I have a good memory. I will keep all of it exactly, every day, so that when I come back it will still be mine and not some other house I have invented missing them. That was the work under the work. That was what the eight years were for.
He did not yet know that his mother had eleven months to live, and his father two years, and that the lane would be sold for a debt that was partly the debt that had sent him here, and that when at last he had money enough to send for word, the word that came back would be that there was no one in the grey house to send for. He did not know any of that on the first night. He had it all still. He lay and kept it, and the man from the near village told him to stop counting, and he did not stop.

They took him to the face on the third day, and the face taught him in an hour what A-Yün had taken four months to learn to bear.
The white was not soft. He had thought, looking at it, that it would come away like sand, and the top skin of it did, a crust you broke with the edge of the shovel, but under the crust it was packed hard as dried mud, harder, a thousand years of it pressed down by its own weight into something between earth and rock, and you cut it with a pick and a long iron bar, swinging into the face until a block came loose, and then you broke the block with the shovel and loaded the barrow and ran the barrow along the plank-ways to the chute and tipped it and ran the empty barrow back, and a man was set over each gang to keep the count of the barrows, because the company drove each digger to a weight a day and docked the rice of the man who fell short. Mei learned the weight that first hour. It was more than a man could do and live long, which was the point; the company had done its own arithmetic; a man who made the weight every day made the company more, in his short life, than the man had cost to buy, and a man who could not make the weight was already a loss and might as well be starved into the work or into the ground. Mei understood the arithmetic at once and hated it without heat, the way he hated the running of his eyes, as a thing being done to him by the place.
But it was the air he had not understood from the water, and could not have.
When you broke the face — when the pick went in and the old packed white came away in a block and crumbled — the air came off it. He had no word for what it was; later, much later, in another life, in another tongue, a man would tell him it was the breath of the thing rotting and call it by a name in English and tell him it was the very stuff they sold, the strength of it, the part the fields were starving for; but at the face on the third day he had no name for it and did not need one, because it went into him as a thing, not a word. It went up his nose and down his throat and it was a burning, dry and chemical and total, that turned the running of his eyes from a weeping to a scald, that made him cough so that he had to set the bar down and put his hands on his knees, that closed his throat to a straw and made him fight for each breath at the very moment the work demanded he breathe like a bellows. The men bound cloths over their faces, and Mei bound his, a strip torn from the hem of his own shirt, and it did nothing he could measure. The white got in through the cloth. It got in at the eyes, which no cloth could cover and a man working could not close. By midday his left eye, which had taken the wind of the face full when a block came down wrong and a cloud of it blew back, had gone from weeping to a different thing — a thick scald, a swelling at the lid, a film coming over the sight of it so that the white mountain on that side went soft and doubled and grey — and he worked the afternoon seeing the world out of one eye and a smear out of the other, and did not stop, because to stop was to short the weight, and to short the weight was to lose the rice, and to lose the rice was to begin to die, and a man who began to die here did not get to go home.
He did not think of it as his eye being taken. That came later, when he understood it was not coming back. On the third day he thought of it only as a thing gone wrong with the work that he must work around, the way you work around a tide, and he shifted himself a half-step at the face so the broken block would gust its breath to his right side and not his left, and he found that the men who had been here longest all stood a little crooked, all favoring one side, and he understood that every man at the face had chosen which eye to keep, and that the choosing was a thing you did once, without knowing you were doing it, on a day you could not afterward name. He filed it. He stood the way the old hands stood. It saved his right eye perhaps a month. He was already, on the third day, counting in months what the place would take, and arranging the small things so it took them slower, and this was not hope. Hope would have been thinking it would not take them. This was bookkeeping. This was a man at the edge of a flood moving the grain to the high shelf, who knows the flood is coming in and means only that it shall have the grain wet last instead of first.
His count of the barrows that day was right. The gang's overseer's count was one short. Mei saw it — saw the man miss a barrow that had gone down while he turned to spit — and Mei said nothing at the face, because a new man who corrected the overseer's count to the overseer's face on the third day would be beaten for cheek and learn nothing; but when the day's weight was tallied at the chute-head and came up one barrow under what the gang had truly cut, and the overseer cursed and made to dock the rice of the slowest digger, a sick boy who had made his weight and did not deserve it, Mei said, low, in the few words of the trade-Spanish he had already begun stealing off the guards, no — one more — there. And he pointed, not at the boy, but at the chute, and held up to the overseer, on his fingers, the true number, and then the false number, and then the difference, one finger, and stood with it, not arguing, only showing, the way you show a sum to a man who can be shown a sum.
The overseer looked at him a long moment. He was a heavy Englishman with a sunburnt neck and a way of standing that said he had been on the wrong side of a count himself, somewhere, long ago. He looked from Mei to the chute and did the sum again himself, slowly, on his own thick fingers, and got Mei's number, and his face did a thing that was not gratitude and was not friendliness. It was the look of a man who has found a tool where he expected only a stone. He did not restore the boy's full rice — that was not the kind of man he was, and Mei had not expected it — but he docked him a half instead of a whole, which was the boy's life by a few weeks, and he looked at Mei again, and said something to a guard, and the guard wrote something in a book.
Mei did not know yet that the something written was his own beginning of being kept alive. He knew only that he had been seen, and that being seen was a thing with two edges. He had not done it for the boy, though he was glad the boy ate. He had done it because a man who could not stop counting could not stand to watch a false count win, the way a man who cannot stop tasting cannot eat spoiled rice and call it sound; it offended a thing in him older than mercy. But he understood, walking back to the shed in the last light with his one eye, that the overseer would remember him, and want him near a count again, and that a man wanted near a count did not die at the face as fast as a man who was only a barrow. He had made himself, in one afternoon, a little harder to spend. He felt no triumph in it. He felt the way the boy at the press-gang's table must have felt, the one he would never meet, the Cornish boy four ships over and thirty years gone, who learned in one afternoon that the only safe place was the side that held the pen. Mei did not hold the pen. But he had shown the man with the pen that the count was wrong, and the man with the pen had not forgotten it, and that was as near the pen as a barrow could get.

A-Yün went over on the ninth day.
It was nothing. That was the part Mei kept, afterward, on the stick and in himself: that it was nothing, that there was no cry and no warning and no last word, that the place did not even stop. They were at the face in the white forenoon, the chutes working, the surf-roar of the birds coming up off the seaward cliff where the column poured down to the shoal, two million of them, more, a darkness in the sky that did not end — and Mei had taken to looking up at it when his eyes were too scalded to bear looking down, because it was the one thing in that place that asked nothing of him and weighed nothing and was free, the birds going out empty and coming back full and going out again, a tide of the living that did not care which empire owned the rock or what a ton fetched in London — and when he looked down from the birds, A-Yün had stopped.
The tile-maker stood with his bar in his two hands and his cloth fallen from his face, and he was looking at the sea. Not at the work, not at the overseer, not at anything that could be docked or driven. At the open water, west, the way the ships came and the way, somewhere past the curve of the world, the grey house on the lane stood with someone in it still or no one, and A-Yün looked at it the way a man looks at a thing he has decided about. Mei knew the look. He had seen it on the ship on the faces of the men who went over the side in the night, and he had seen it once on the factor's face in Amoy the week before the factor hanged himself in the counting-house, and he opened his mouth to say the man's name, to say A-Yün, the barrow, come, the barrow, to put a small dull thing in front of the man's eyes to stand between him and the sea —
and A-Yün set the iron bar down.
He set it down. That was what Mei could not get past, the years he carried it: that the man set the bar down gently, leaned it against the face so it would not fall and trouble anyone, the courtesy of a tidy man, a maker of things, who would not leave a tool in the dirt even now — and then he walked to the edge, four steps, five, past the lip of the chute where the white went down to the boats, and he did not jump and he did not fall. He walked off it. He walked off the cliff the way a man walks out of a room he is finished being in, without hurry, without looking back, and the white surf took him two hundred feet down and the birds did not break their pouring and the chutes did not stop and the overseer, when he saw, swore once, a tired sound, and shouted for the gap in the line to be closed up, one short, close it up, and the barrows went on.
Mei went to the edge. He was let to, for a moment; even here a moment was let, the first time. He looked down. He had thought he would see the man, broken on the rocks, a thing to be afraid of. He saw only the surf working white at the foot of the white cliff, and the birds, and the boats taking the mountain out to the ships, and no sign at all that a maker of roof-tiles from a village a half-day from his own, who had a wife and a son of eleven, had ever stood in the world. The sea had logged him the way the beam logged the rice. It had taken the weight and given no receipt.
The overseer made Mei carry the count straight after. That was the thing. Because Mei was the man near the count now, the man the book had a note on, when the gang's number had to be set right against the one that had walked into the sea, it was Mei the overseer turned to, Mei who had to hold up on his fingers the gang as it had been at dawn and the gang as it was now, the live number, the working number, A-Yün subtracted out of it as clean as a barrow that had gone down the chute and not come back, and Mei held the numbers up with the hand that did not shake because he would not let it shake in front of the man with the book, and the guard wrote the new figure down, and the company's ledger was made true. One short. Close it up. He had made it true. He had counted his own near-brother out of the living and into the white, with his own hand, in numbers, because that was the thing he was now, the thing that kept him alive, and the place had arranged it so that the only skill that could save him was also the skill that made him the clerk of the men it killed.
He did not weep. He had decided about weeping a long time before, in a wineshop in Amoy, watching a broker draw the character for eight in spilled liquor. He went back to the face and made his weight, because A-Yün's son was eleven and would never know, and because making the weight was the only prayer left that the place would hear, and because a man who stopped now would only be one more short to close up.
That night, in the shed, when the others slept, Mei took the haft of the broken-handled barrow-tool he had carried back from the face without quite deciding to, a length of hard pale wood the size of his forearm, smoothed by years of hands, and with the edge of a flake of slate he had been keeping in his shirt for no reason he could have named, he cut a notch into it.
One notch. Clean, square, deep enough to find with a fingertip in the dark.
It was not the company's count. The company's count was true now, made true by his own hand at the chute-head, and the company had no use for the dead once they were closed up; a dead man cut no more guano and ate no more rice and was, on the company's beam, a purchase that had finished paying out. The notch was Mei's count. It was a different ledger, and it had in it the one figure the company's books were built to lose: not how many barrows, not how many tons, not how many pounds at the port — how many men. He set the man's name in his memory beside the notch — Cheng A-Yün, tile-maker, a village a half-day west, a wife, a son of eleven — because a man with a good memory could carry a name where a notch could only carry a number, and the notch was so the name would have a place to stand, a thing in the world to be true against, in a country whose every scale and book and beam was arranged to weigh him and forget him.
He held the stick a moment in the dark. He could not have said what it was for. He told himself it was only so he would know, so that one of them would have counted, so that when he stood at last in the grey house on the lane and his mother asked him what it had been like, the country across the water where they sent the men, he would not have to say I do not remember, it was only white, it was only the smell, but could say a number, and a name, and another name, and put down on her stone table the proof that he had been somewhere real and that men he had known had been real and had ended. He told himself it was a thing he was carrying home.
He did not let himself feel the other thing, which was that he had begun a book, and that he was its first clerk, and that he did not yet know how long it would have to be, or whose hands it would pass into, or that the woman it would finally rest beside, three lives from now, would weigh her last cargo against it and find, in the end, that the notches and the tons had always been the same account kept twice — once in the white going out, and once in the men going under the white, and that no one had ever been meant to read them together.
He put the stick inside his shirt, against the folded paper with the eight on it, where the salt had not yet got either. Then he lay down on the boards with his one good eye open in the dark, and listened to the surf, and the birds, which did not stop even at night, the high far roar of the number too large to be a sound, and he began, against the column of eight years and the hundred and ten days, to count the next morning toward home.
His left eye, when he woke, was crusted shut.
MANIFEST I — The Discovery
Chapter 3Mei Loong-fa

The crusted eye he opened with a wet rag, working the lid loose a little at a time so as not to tear it, and the work taught him the second thing the islands had to teach, after the weight. The first thing was that a man here was a number. The second was that a man here was given his blindness slowly, in instalments, the way the broker in Amoy had given him the lie — eight years drawn in spilled liquor, paid out in days — so that he might keep believing, each morning, that this was the worst of it, and so spend his strength bearing the worst of it instead of fleeing it. He did not flee it. He had nowhere to flee to but the sea, where A-Yün had gone, and he had a better use for himself than the sea had. He worked the lid loose, and the grey light came into the eye soft and doubled, and he counted it as a thing he still had, a quarter of an eye, and he got up.
It was the tenth day. He set the count beside the other counts before his feet were under him, because the counts were the first things awake in him now, ahead of hunger, ahead of the burn in the throat the night never quite carried off. Eight years was a column. A hundred and ten days was a row against the first year of the column, and the row had a number now, and the number was small, and he made himself look at how small it was the way you make yourself look at a wound, to know it. Two thousand seven hundred and seventy days remained in the eight years, by his reckoning, if the eight years were true, which they were not. He kept the false count anyway. A man needed a wall to lean the days against, even a wall he knew was painted on a cliff.
There was the other count, the one on the stick.
He took it out from against his ribs where it lay with the folded paper, and found the one notch with his thumb in the dark of the shed before the others stirred, and he did not add to it, because no one had gone over in the night that he had heard, and he did not cut the stick for the dead he only supposed. He cut it for the dead he had seen. That was the law of the stick, made by him, the only law on the island he had made himself. He pressed his thumb into the notch a moment. Cheng A-Yün, tile-maker, a village a half-day west, a wife, a son of eleven. Then he put the stick away and went out to the face, where the white mountain stood over the sheds in the last of the dark, a hundred and eighty feet of it the men said, though no man Mei had asked had ever climbed it to know, and the price of it that morning, when the overseer said it to the boat-master at the chute, was ten pounds the ton in a country across the sea, and the overseer said it the way the women at home said the kitchen-god's name on the right days — low, and with respect, and as if the saying of it kept something fed.

The overseer's name was Quick. Mei learned it on the eleventh day, off the guards, who said it the way men say the name of the weather.
He learned it because he had decided to learn it. A man who knew the name of the thing that held his life could ask after it, could read its moods, could tell on a given morning whether the thing was hungry or fed; and the overseer was the weather of the island, the high pressure that decided whose rice was docked and whose face went to the worst of the face, and Mei meant to read him the way the fishermen at the Amoy wharf read the colour of the dawn. So he watched the man. Quick was heavy and sunburnt at the neck and he carried a book that was not the company's true book but a tally he kept for himself, against the night's loading, and Mei saw on the eleventh day that the overseer could not keep a running sum in his head over a long forenoon any better than a child could, and lost the thread of it when he was spoken to, and had to start the column again from the top, cursing, his thick finger going down the line. Mei filed this. It was the most valuable thing he had learned since the price. A man who could not hold a sum was a man who needed one who could, and needing was the one hunger on the island a barrow could feed and live.
He did not show the overseer his own count again, not for nine days. He had learned from the first time that a tool shown too eagerly is a tool a man learns to do without, or breaks. He let the overseer find him slowly. He stood near the count without being at it. He corrected nothing aloud. But when the chute-head tally came up wrong on the nineteenth day — and it came up wrong often, because Quick's column would not hold — Mei was near, with his bar in his hands and his face to the work, and he let his right eye, the good one, go to the chute and the boats and the barrows that had gone down, and he kept the true number against the false one in the place behind his face where he kept everything, and he held it ready, and waited to be reached for.
It was not patience. Patience was for men who believed the waiting would end in something. It was bookkeeping again, the man at the edge of the flood moving the grain to the high shelf. He was moving himself to the high shelf. He was making himself, one forenoon at a time, the grain the flood would take wet last instead of first, and the high shelf was the count, and the flood was the place, and he did not hope to be dry. He hoped to be taken slower.

The face on the twelfth day gave him the cough.
He had thought, in his ignorance, that the air had already done to him what the air would do — the running of the eyes, the scald that had filmed the left one, the burn that sat in the throat all day and would not be swallowed down. He had thought of these as a tax already paid. But the air was not a tax. The air was a creditor, and it kept its own column, and on the twelfth day, when a block came down rotten and crumbled to powder before it reached the barrow and the powder went up in a white gust the wind laid straight into him, the creditor called a payment he had not known he owed. It started in the chest, low, a tickle that was not a tickle, a thing with an edge to it, and it built, and then it took him — a cough that doubled him over the bar, that came up from somewhere under the lungs and would not stop coming, that left him on his knees at the foot of the white with his hands in the broken guano and his whole body working like a pump that had lost its water, hauling for a breath the air would not give back clean. He brought up something at the end of it. He did not look at what. He had seen the old hands bring up the same and not look, and he understood now why: a man who looked would count it, and this was a count he did not want to keep.
He knelt and got the breath back by halves and stood, because to stay down was to short the weight, and he went on. But he had a new thing now, filed where the others were filed, and the new thing was this: that the place did not take a man all at once, the way the sea had taken A-Yün, clean, in four steps off a cliff. The place took a man the way the tide takes a stake driven in the shallows — a hand's breadth a season, so slow you swore each morning the stake stood where it had, until the day you came down and the stake was gone and the water stood where the stake had been, and you could not say which tide had done it. The eye was a hand's breadth. The cough was a hand's breadth. He stood at the face on the twelfth day and understood that he was the stake, and that the island would not push him over; it would only stand him in the water and wait, and call its small payments, and let him believe each morning he was where he had been. He understood it without heat. Then he made his weight, because A-Yün's son was eleven and would never know, and because there was no other prayer the place would hear.

He saw the girl on the fifteenth day.
The women were kept apart, in a long low shed at the far end past the stores, behind a fence the guards walked, and the men did not go there and the women did not come to the face, and Mei had marked this on the first morning the way he marked everything, the fence and the guards and the door, and had thought: that is a worse place than this, and I will not let myself look at it, because a man cannot carry the face and that both, and live. He had kept to it. He had not looked. But on the fifteenth day a party of the women was brought down to the beach under guard to carry water from the condenser to the stores, because the men were all on the face and the ships were waiting and water did not carry itself, and Mei was running a barrow along the high plank-way above the beach when he looked down — not at them, at the chute, to count it — and his eye, his one eye, went past the chute to the line of women on the shingle with the water-jars on their shoulders, and stopped.
He could not have said why it stopped. There was a girl at the end of the line, small, far too small for the jar she carried, a child's frame under a woman's load, and she carried it the way a person carries a thing they have decided not to be beaten by — square, from the hips, the weight kept off the spine, the trick of it learned hard and kept — and there was something in the set of her shoulders, in the way she turned her head a half-inch to read the guard without seeming to, that was a thing Mei knew. It was his own trick. It was the trick of a person who could not stop watching, who read the guard off his boot and the day off the overseer's hands, who kept a count behind the face. He had thought himself the only one of his kind on the island. He stood on the plank-way with the barrow's weight pulling at his arms and looked down at the small square shoulders and the turned head, and a thing went through him the counts had no column for, and he had to set the barrow down on its leg or drop it.
She was too far to be a face. She was a way of standing. But the way of standing went into him the way the smell had gone into Penhale on the deck of a ship Mei would never hear of, ahead of his consent, and it logged something, and the something it logged was a question with no number in it, and the question was: how old. For she was small. And the women trafficked to this place were few, and brought for the one purpose the few were brought for, and Mei had not let himself think of that purpose since the first morning, and now he thought of it, looking at the child's frame on the shingle, and the thought was a thing he could not put down on the high shelf, because it had his own height of shoulder in it, and a half-day's distance of dialect, and the particular cold of a stone floor under a bare foot in the second month of the year.
"Move," said the guard behind him on the plank-way, and put a hand to the barrow, and Mei took it up and moved, and did not look down again, because a man who looked too long at the women's line on the beach was a man the guards remembered, and a man the guards remembered did not get near the count. He went on with the barrow. But he carried the way of standing down to the chute and back, and he did not cut the stick for it, because the stick was for the dead, and the girl was not dead. He had no stick for the living he could not reach. He made one in himself instead, a place behind the place where the counts lived, and he set the small square shoulders in it, and he thought, in the trade-Spanish he was stealing and in the Amoy tongue under it: I will find out how old. Not today. When I am near the count, and the guards have forgotten my face, and a man near the count can ask a thing of a guard and not be marked for it. Then I will find out how old, and whose, and from where. It was the first thing he had wanted on the island that was not survival. He noted that it was the first thing, and he was afraid of it, the way the counts had never made him afraid.

Quick reached for him on the twentieth day.
It came as Mei had known it would come — not as kindness, never as kindness, but as a man reaching for a tool he has decided he cannot work without. The chute-head tally had come up two barrows short against a loading the boat-master swore was right, and the boat-master was a hard Yankee who would not pay for guano the company could not prove had gone down, and Quick's column would not hold the morning's barrows three times running, and the loading stood, and the ship in the offing rolled at her anchor burning the company's money by the hour, and Quick stood at the chute-head red to the sunburnt neck with the false book in his fist, and looked down the line of diggers for the one he had marked, and his eye found Mei.
"You," Quick said. He did not have the man's name. He had the note in the company's book that a guard had written on the third day, and he had the memory of a count set right with one finger, and that was all he had, and it was enough, because it was the only thing on the island Quick lacked and needed. "You count. Count it."
Mei set down his bar. He did not hurry, and he did not crawl. He went to the chute-head and did the morning over in his head, the whole forenoon's barrows from each gang, the number he had kept behind his face without being asked, against nothing, for twenty days, against exactly this hour — and he held it up to the overseer on his fingers, the gangs' true number, and then he held up the boat's number, and then the difference, and then he turned and pointed, not at any man, but at a lighter low in the swell below the chute that had taken a load and not yet been tallied in, two barrows' worth riding off the boat-master's books because it had gone down while Quick's column broke, and he held up two fingers, and stood with it.
Quick looked at the lighter. He looked at the boat-master. He did the sum again himself, slow, on his thick fingers, and got Mei's number, and his face did the thing it had done at the first count — not gratitude, not friendliness; the look of a man who has found a tool where he expected a stone, and is angry to have needed it, and will need it again. He said something to the boat-master, who swore and signed. Then he turned back to Mei, and looked at him a long moment with the false book in his fist, and Mei stood with his bar left behind at the face and his one eye level and his face giving nothing, the way a tool gives nothing, and waited to be told what he now was.
"You're off the face," Quick said. "Tally crew. You'll keep my count." And then, because he was a man who could not give a thing without taking the worth of it back in the same breath, he added: "Mind you keep it true. A short count costs the company. I'll know."
Mei bowed his head the inch a tool bows, and did not let his face show the one thing he felt, which was not relief and was not triumph, but a cold settling, the weight of a thing arriving that he had worked twenty days to bring down on himself and now had on him for good. Off the face. The eye would go slower now. The cough might hold where it was. He would live longer; he had made himself, with one finger held up against a false number, harder to spend, and the high shelf was his. He had counted himself up onto it.
But he knew what the count was, too, because he had carried the first notch nineteen days against his ribs. The overseer's count was the company's count, barrows and tons and pounds at the port, and a tally-man who kept it true kept it true for all of it — and a count of barrows was a count of the men who pushed them, and a count of the live was a count that began, each dawn, with the dead of the night subtracted out, and the subtracting was a thing the tally-man did, with his own hand, on the overseer's order, before the first barrow rolled. He had done it once for A-Yün and it had been a horror done to him. Now it would be his work. He would sit at the high shelf above the flood and he would, every morning, count the gang as it had been and the gang as it was, and write the difference, and close it up, and the place had arranged it so — he saw the whole shape of it now, standing at the chute-head with the price of guano in his good ear and the white mountain at his back — the place had arranged it so that the only skill that could lift a man off the killing face was the skill that made him the clerk of the killing. He had not been spared. He had been promoted into the keeping of the books of the dead.
He went down to the beach in the last light to be shown the tally-station, past the fence at the women's end, and he made himself not turn his head; but he heard, over the surf and the never-ceasing far roar of the birds pouring down to the shoal, a girl's voice from behind the fence say something low and quick and hard to another woman — a complaint, an order, a joke, he could not tell which, but it was fast, and it had an edge, faster and edged where his own would have gone flat and silent — and the tongue of it was the tongue of a village a half-day west of the lane that ran down to the harbour at Amoy. He did not stop. He filed the voice with the shoulders. Two things now, of the living, in the place behind the place. He went to the station, and was shown the book, and took up the company's pen for the first time in his life, and that night, in the shed, he took out his own stick and held it in the dark, and did not cut it, because no one had died that he had seen; but he understood, holding it, that the pen and the stick were the same length of work seen from two ends, and that he was now, on this rock at the bottom of the world, the only man keeping both — the count the company wanted, of what the white was worth, and the count no one wanted, of what it cost — and that no one had ever meant the two to be read together, and that he would read them together every day until he died or went home, and that he did not yet know which of those would come, only that the girl with the square shoulders was eleven, he was nearly sure of it now, eleven, the age of A-Yün's son, the age his own youngest brother had been the morning he carried his father's net down to the harbour and did not come home, and that he would have to find out whose she was before he let himself think the thing his chest had already thought, on the plank-way, ahead of his consent, looking down.
He put the pen-hand and the stick-hand together in the dark, the right that would keep the company's count and the right that had cut the dead man's notch — they were the same hand — and he lay down with his one good eye open, and counted the morning toward home, and toward the fence, and did not let himself know yet that they were not the same direction.
